Cineplex Odious – July 28, 2004

I think that officer John Douglas should be given a hero’s welcome – that type of rudeness doesn’t belong anywhere, let alone a public movie theater.

Just my opinion though.

has identified a fix for when “Firefox 0.9.x for Windows incorrectly registers itself as the default handler for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and GOPHER transactions, causing it to launch two browser windows or one window and an error.”

Outstanding. I was going to (okay I already did) blame it on other programs causing the problem.

(I already emailed Luke Hutteman and told him that it wasn’t his product, SharpReader, that was causing the problem but FireFox.)

Apple Parody Fuse Ads

Although I don’t usually react the way these people do over bad music videos (especially the “Self-Plaguer”) but, hey, what ever turns your crank, so to speak.

Well, maybe the fart lighter… however I don’t know ANYONE that would light one for me, let alone stand behind to do it.

The New York Times > Opinion > Op-Ed Columnist: War of Ideology

In his opinion piece, dated July 24, 2004, David Brooks made me think. Difficult to do for me today, since I just drove home from vacation. Here are some choice quotes to think about from his article. I usually don’t quote much from articles, instead linking to the article for you all to read in its totality, but since the archives articles rather quickly, you’d have to pay to read it in a week or two. Quite annoying so I’m quoting instead.

“We’re not in the middle of a war on terror, they note. We’re not facing an axis of evil. Instead, we are in the midst of an ideological conflict.”

“We are facing, the report notes, a loose confederation of people who believe in a perverted stream of Islam that stretches from Ibn Taimaya to Sayyid Qutb. Terrorism is just the means they use to win converts to their cause.”

“When you see that our enemies are primarily an intellectual movement, not a terrorist army, you see why they are in no hurry. With their extensive indoctrination infrastructure of madrassas and mosques, they’re still building strength, laying the groundwork for decades of struggle. Their time horizon can be totally different from our own.
But the bigger fight is with a hostile belief system that can’t be reasoned with but can only be “destroyed or utterly isolated.””

“The commissioners don’t say it, but the implication is clear. We’ve had an investigation into our intelligence failures; we now need a commission to analyze our intellectual failures. ”

“Last week I met with a leading military officer stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq, whose observations dovetailed remarkably with the 9/11 commissioners. … He observed that we are in the fight against Islamic extremism now where we were in the fight against communism in 1880.”

I’ve got to give this some more thought, preferably when I’m not experiencing travel vision. Still, that last quote from the unnamed military person is rather chilling.

The Project Apollo Image Gallery

Wow. Not much else to say.

Jake Ludington’s Digital Lifestyle – DIY Bottle Cap Tripod

I read about the manufactured version of this yesterday and already there is a knock off. Very cool as well. Have to try this when I get home…

IDFuel, the Industrial Design Weblog – Stuck on You

First, what a great resource.

Second, why don’t people add the title of the article to the title of the page? It would make linking sooo much easier.

Third, why do I care when I’m on vacation? Camera and Photo: Philips Key019 Key Ring Camcorder

Isn’t it absolutely amazing when something you think would be cool shows up available for purchase? This thumb drive with attached digital video camera is fantastic! My only difference between it and my imagination is that I had imagined the camera as a separate component so that the user could switch memory when the first was full or when larger capacity was available.

Still, if I had extra $$ I’d buy one in a moment. I might still find a way… somehow…

Rock ‘N’ Roll Holiday Escape!

Over the years, I went to concerts by each of these groups; I have their albums. Something about being on the same boat as ALL of them is … quite unsettling. I enjoyed and still enjoy their music, mostly. However, I don’t think I want to be around them, part of their experience.

Fifteen years ago, I’d have given a treasured body part to be that close to just one of them. Have I changed… or have they? Both?

I don’t know either.

Human Beans: PowerPizza

This… is quite cool. Really. I don’t think it is quite the item to purchase from a internet site; I could probably make one for less and get a pizza to eat at the same time.
